Chapter Four

The Third Victim: 11:28 AM

Even after Abby and Jimmy were injured, a lot of us still had no idea anything was going on. That’s why me, Emma, and Toby were not scared or anything as we made our way to the library to work on a Media Immersion project. That is, until we ran into Rick.

 Sean Cameron, 10th

I’m sorry I was rude to Rick. I’m sorry the others were cruel. I’m sorry Mr. Raditch ignored his pleas for help and I’m sorry Spinner and Jay dumped paint on him. I’m sorry Toby was his only friend; I’m sorry he put Terri into a coma. But most of all, I’m sorry Rick Murray thought his only option was to bring a gun with him to school.

 Emma Nelson, 10th

I know about shootings; there’ve been three at my old school in the past five years. I’d never actually witnessed one, though, until that day. Let me tell you: as horrific as it may seem through the news and all of the stories, nothing even comes close to actually seeing it in person. Comparing the two is like comparing a ripple with a tidal wave.

Sean Cameron, 10th

I couldn’t believe Rick would do something like this. He was my friend – shouldn’t I have known him better? More like, shouldn’t he have known better? He didn’t have to do that, get that extreme. He could have talked to me. I would have helped him, if he had asked.

 Toby Issacs, 10th

It quickly became quite obvious that I was high on Rick’s “Most Wanted” list. He had the gun pointed straight at me. I could see his finger on the trigger, ready and willing. I was too scared to do anything; too scared to breathe. It’s hard to understand unless you’ve been it that sort of situation. All that exsists is you and that pistol.

 Emma Nelson, 10th

Rick wanted Emma. He was still angry at her for not loving him the way he loved her, or something. I don’t really know the details; I never wanted to. What I do know, though, is that the only reason Emma is alive today is Sean Cameron.

 Toby Issacs, 10th

I did what any other person would do – I tried to talk Rick into putting the gun down. When it became clear that that wasn’t working, I took matters into my own hands and tried to grab the gun. We wrestled with it for a moment, but the next thing I knew it had gone off and Rick was bleeding.

Sean Cameron, 10th

I don’t care what he tells you – Sean Cameron saved my life. He denies it, but the fact remains that one second the gun was pointed at me and the next, it wasn’t.

 Emma Nelson, 10th

Did I shoot Rick Murray? Who knows. Did I play an important role in his death? Yes. Will the sound of that gunshot haunt me forever? Yes.

 Sean Cameron, 10th
